A bank in Mohanlalganj, 25 km from Lucknow, handed over a bag packed with one rupee coins against Rs 2000 (in old denomination) to a 60 year old lady.

After standing in the queue for long hours, Sarju Devi handed over the 2000 rupee to the cashier. The cashier returned a bag weighing around 17 kilogram packed with one rupee coins, Hindustan Times reported.

“Is it justified? After spending hours in queues, to get my own money, I am being paid in one rupee coins. The bag weighs around 17kg, that I couldn’t even carry home.” The lady told Hindustan Times.

Devi alleged the cashier turned a deaf ear to her pleas. “bank will give money in whatever denominations it will receive. Take it, or go back,” the cashier said.

Devi was in urgent need of money for the treatment of her cancer-diagnosed son. “Radio therapy keeps my son going. Since three days, we couldn’t get it done as no one is accepting the change. They don’t have time to count Re 1 coins,” she said.

The woman had to call her son to take the over-weighed bag home.

Sarju Devi’s son was diagnosed with cancer and the chief minister had granted Rs 1 lakh for the treatment.
