Kolkata, May 12 — In a strong push towards modern manufacturing and self-reliance, Bata India has installed a state-of-the-art DESMA-PUDIP (Polyurethane Direct Injection Process) machine at its flagship Bata Nagar factory in Kolkata. The upgrade marks a major step in the company’s commitment to the Make in India initiative and local industrial development.
Manufactured by global leader DESMA, the new system introduces robotic automation and precision processes for automated direct soling, robotic spray and roughening, and auto mold processing — all aimed at improving production speed, quality, and consistency. The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance output and optimize manpower at one of India’s oldest and most iconic footwear manufacturing hubs.

The inauguration was attended by Mr. Maloy Ghatak, Minister of Labour & Law, and Mr. Avanindra Singh (IAS), Labour Secretary, Government of West Bengal. From the company, Mr. Anjan Kundu, Head of Supply Chain, was present on-site, while CEO Gunjan Shah and Bata Global’s Chief Supply Chain Officer David Lynch joined virtually.
Speaking at the event, Gunjan Shah, MD & CEO, Bata India, said, “The DESMA-PUDIP machine marks a bold stride in modernizing our manufacturing. It reaffirms our commitment to ‘Make in India,’ innovation, and creating long-term value. This is an investment into a more efficient, sustainable, and competitive future for Bata India.”
With this installation, Bata India aims to scale up its production of industrial and safety footwear, aligning with India’s broader push for a robust, self-reliant manufacturing base. The company’s Kolkata facility — operational since pre-Independence — continues to evolve as a modern hub of high-quality, tech-enabled production.
The move also signals a deeper engagement with the West Bengal government and a long-term focus on regional employment, skill development, and supply chain localization — all critical elements of India’s industrial growth story.
