Bengal Assembly Elections Congress Candidates: The Congress party has now named 284 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections. This came out on Sunday as the party got ready for a big fight in the state on its own. One of the biggest names in the list is Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has been picked from Baharampur. Reports also said other important names include Pradip Prasad from Bhabanipur and former MP Mausam Noor from Malatipur. The list came after Congress decided not to fight this election with the Left and instead go alone in Bengal.

The candidate list also included Abdul Hannan from Sujapur, Madhap Rai from Darjeeling, Gautam Bhattacharya from Diamond Harbour, Susmita Biswas from Dum Dum, Souvik Mukherjee from Asansol Dakshin and Prasenjit Puitandi from Asansol Uttar. By putting out such a large list, the party is trying to show that it wants to be taken seriously in this election and not stay on the side as a smaller player.

Bengal set for hard three-way fight

This election is still mostly being seen as a major battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP, which is the main opposition in the state. Even so, Congress wants to make the contest more complicated by trying to turn it into a three-cornered fight in many seats. By going solo, the party seems to be testing how much support it still has in Bengal after years of weak results.

The voting plan this time is very different from the last Assembly election. The Election Commission has said West Bengal will vote in only two phases this year. The first round of polling will happen on April 23 and the second round will be held on April 29. Vote counting is fixed for May 4. This is much shorter than before, because the 2021 election was held in eight phases.

Last election

Congress goes into this election with a lot to recover. In the 2021 Assembly polls, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress won a huge victory and took 215 of the 294 seats in the state. The BJP became the main opposition with 77 seats. Congress and the Left failed to win even one seat. That result badly hurt Congress in Bengal and left the party with very little space in the state’s politics.
