Best Ayurvedic Prevention Guide From Pollution: One of the most worrying patterns I saw this year especially around the end of year is the sudden rush of children in Paediatric OPDs. I dont need to make everyone aware of the current AQI of nation’s capital as well. Recurrent coughs, colds, wheezing, allergies, and breathlessness have become almost routine. And the sad part? These issues are rising rapidly and affecting younger and younger children each year.
Seasonal pollution, combined with weaker immunity and developing organs, makes children three times more vulnerable than adults. Even unborn babies are not spared, pollution exposure during pregnancy directly affects foetal lung development. As Ayurveda students, we learn that this is not merely a seasonal issue; it is a disturbance of the fundamental respiratory channels called Pranavaha Srotas.
In this blog, I’m sharing a simple, practical, and highly effective Ayurvedic guide for parents to protect their children’s respiratory health. When applied wisely, Ayurveda truly works wonders.
Why Children Are More Vulnerable to Delhi’s Air Pollution?

Modern science and Ayurveda both agree on one thing: children breathe more, absorb more, and react more intensely to pollutants.
From a medical and physiological perspective:
- Their lung capacity is smaller, allowing toxins to penetrate deeper.
- Kids have a higher respiratory rate, so they inhale more polluted air.
- Their immune system is still developing, making infections more frequent.
Ayurvedic explanation

According to Ayurveda, childhood is mainly dominated by Kapha dosha, which is the source of growth and nourishment. However, too much Kapha also signifies:
- More mucus production
- Faster congestion
- Greater sensitivity to cold and damp conditions
Pollution aggravates Vata and Kapha, which aggravate Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory channels). This in turn weakens Agni (digestive fire) and Ojas (immunity & vitality), thus a child becomes more susceptible to repeated illnesses.
Ayurveda’s Deep Understanding of Respiratory Disturbances
Our classical texts say:
Pollution = Pranavaha Srotas Dushti
This results in:
- Cough
- Breathing difficulty
- Wheezing
- Heaviness in chest
- Poor appetite
Weakening of Agni and Ojas
Cold air, dust, and pollution are the main factors that deteriorate Agni (digestive & metabolic fire), and consequently, the body loses its immunity (Ojas).
Increase in Kapha + Vata
That sets the stage for the conditions like:
- Allergies
- Sinus issues
- Frequent colds
- Asthmatic tendencies
Best Ayurvedic Prevention Guide From Pollution
Daily Nasya with Warm Sesame Oil: Only 1–2 drops in each nostril. Nasya helps to clean the nasal passages, prevent dust from entering, and strengthen the Pranavaha Srotas.
Warm Water Hydration: Definitely no cold water! Warm water rids the body of excessive Kapha and is calming to the throat.
2–3 Minutes of Steam Inhalation: Adding tulsi + ajwain gives the inhalation antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Do Not Eat Kapha-Aggravating Food at Night
For example:
- Curd
- Cold fruits
- Ice creams
- Cold drinks
Trap Dust At Home: Place wet towels near windows as they catch particulate matter effectively.
Keep Air-Purifying Plants: Tulsi, Neem, and Snake Plant help maintain cleaner indoor air.

Additional Ayurvedic Measures To Protect Your Child From Pollution
Regular Dhoopan: Burning Guggul + Ajwain not only cleans the environment but also removes microbes.
Honey for Sore Throat: (For children above 1 year.) Honey helps to relieve the irritation and lowers the cough.
Easy Breathing Exercises: Balloon inflating, simple pranayama, and humming can greatly help in increasing lung capacity.
When You Should Consult a Vaidya?
If your child is displaying these symptoms, please definitely not postpone your visit to a doctor:
- Cough that lasts more than 5 days
- Noise while breathing/wheezing
- Fever with congestion
- No appetite and unusual lethargy
- Any breathing difficulty (requires immediate medical help)
Ayurveda works wonderfully, but timely diagnosis and proper evaluation are just as important.
Being a BAMS student, I witness every day how uncomplicated Ayurvedic principles if applied properly can lead to the prevention of recurrent infections, reduction of allergies, strengthening of immunity, and making breathing easy for children.
