The legendary Indian vocalist, Bhimsen Joshi was known popularly known for his renditions in devotional music as well as his mesmerizing performance in Indian classical music. Bhimsen who won the highest civilian honor, Bharat Ratna, had given his voice in numerous Marathi and Hindi albums. Joshi lived his life with great honor and pride but on January 24, 2011, he left everybody mourns in grief but his music has still been everlasting in each and everyone’s heart.

Here are some facts about the life and career of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi:

  • Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was born in the small town called Ron in Karnataka on February 4, 1922. As a child, he was very fond of music and musical instruments. Joshi’s first music guru was Channapa of Kurtakoti.
  • His musical journey was commenced in early 1943 when he gave his first live performance followed by his first release of the album under HMV, a collection of devotional songs in Marathi and Kannada.
  • Bhimsen Joshi also gave his voice to the Hindi songs like ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ and later he became the part of AR Rahman’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’.4. Joshi was honored with great civilian awards of Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan in 1972 and 1999 respectively.
  • In 1985, he was presented with National Film Award in the category of Best Playback Male Singer and later on in1998 he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.
