Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: The three-member Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, will likely visit Bihar on October 4. The purpose of the visit is to check how ready the State is for elections to its 243 Assembly constituencies. The current Bihar Assembly’s term ends on November 22.

After the 2 day visit which will finish on October 5, the poll body is expected to announce the much-awaited election schedule. According to Deccan Herald, the commission will keep in mind the upcoming festivals of Deepavali and Chhath which end in the last week of October, so voting does not clash with celebrations.

Before this visit, the Election Commission held meetings with the District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police in all 38 districts of Bihar. They discussed election preparedness, considering the extended monsoon rains and the ongoing festive season. T

his will be the first time the Election Commission is visiting the State after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in July. The final voters’ list, published on September 30, shows Bihar has 7.42 crore voters now, down from the earlier 7.9 crore. The Opposition has claimed the SIR led to mass disenfranchisement and may meet the Election Commission team, which will also include the other two members, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi to raise their concerns.

Election preparation

The Election Commission has decided to send 470 officers as observers for the upcoming polls. This includes 320 IAS officers, 60 IPS officers, and 90 officers from other services.

These observers work in three main streams like general, police, and expenditure. They act as the eyes and ears of the Election Commission and are seen as watchdogs who make sure the elections are fair. A briefing for these observers is likely on October 3.

In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, voting was held in three phases. Bihar was the first State to hold elections after the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2025, Bihar will again be the first State to hold Assembly elections after the SIR exercise, making this a closely watched election.
