Bihar government doubles compensation: On Tuesday, the Bihar government increased the sum granted to accident survivors and doubled the compensation given to the families of migrant workers who died while working in other states.

The majority of the nation’s working force is contributed to by the state.

The new regulations provide the next-of-kin of migrant employees who pass away in other states with Rs 2 lakh instead of the previous Rs 1 lakh.

Instead of the previous Rs 75,000 grant, those who are totally incapacitated as a result of an accident would now receive a payout of Rs 1 lakh. The workers who are partially crippled would now receive Rs 50,000 instead of the previous Rs 37,500. Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, presided over by the chief minister Nitish Kumar, reached the decision.

“The cabinet approved the implementation of the amendments in the rules 5, 5a, and 5b of the state migrant worker accident grant scheme under the labour resources department to facilitate enhanced compensation and grants in cases of death or accident of migrant workers from Bihar in other states,” said cabinet department additional chief secretary S. Siddharth.

According to Arvind Kumar, the joint labour commissioner for Bihar, compensation for the death or incapacity of a migrant worker would be given upon the request of the worker’s family.

“A number of papers, including copies of the FIR, post-mortem findings, and medical reports, must be submitted with the claims form. Such claims are rather infrequent for a state like Bihar. In a typical year, we process 115 to 120 migrant worker death claims, according to Arvind.

The number of state migrants is not estimated by the labour resources department. When a substantial number of people returned home in an exodus-like situation amid the lockdowns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the disaster management department estimated the number at roughly 30 lakh.

The majority of them were confined at designated centres and their homes after being compelled to return owing to the loss of employment and housing options.
