Bihar govt suspends training: In response to objections that it would deny them the Durga Puja holidays, the Bihar government on Tuesday cancelled a residential training programme for teachers of state-run schools midway through. According to the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the residential training programme started on Monday and was scheduled to go until October 21.

For a few unavoidable reasons, the SCERT has decided to postpone the previously scheduled October 16–October 21 residential training for instructors. The Tuesday notification stated that the revised training programme would be disclosed later.

The Durga Puja vacations started on Tuesday in some areas of the state while they would start on October 19 in other districts, according to officials. TET Primary Teachers’ Association convenor Raju Singh praised the decision to halt the training initiative, saying, “Teachers are ecstatic over the Education Department’s announcement.”

We appreciate Nitish Kumar’s choice as chief minister. We now ask the CM to recognise the enormous number of contractual teachers who have been employed for years as government employees.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh discussed the matter with Governor Rajendra Arlekar last week. ”Decision by the SCERT of the Education Department to hold residential training of teachers during Durga Puja is against religious sensitivities of Hindu teachers,” he had told reporters following the meeting.
