BJP MLA Vijay Kumar Sinha elected has been elected as Speaker of Bihar assembly by majority vote. This is the first time, since the JD(U)-BJP alliance came to power in 2005, that the saffron party will have a Speaker.
The RJD-led Grand Alliance (GA) fielded Awadh Bihari Choudhary as their candidate against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Vijay Kumar Sinha for the post of the Speaker in the Bihar assembly. The Opposition’s move is the first test of strength for chief minister Nitish Kumar-led NDA government which has a slender majority in the 243-member House.
Vijay Kumar Sinha, who was a minister in the previous Nitish Kumar government, profusely thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah “for reposing trust in me and demonstrating, yet again, that in the BJP an ordinary worker can scale great heights”.
