Black Poetry Day 2023: Black Poetry Day is observed annually on October 17 to pay homage to all contemporary and historical African-American poets of exceptional ability. Regardless of one’s ethnicity, individuals who have an interest in literature, poetry, or writing will undoubtedly adore Black Poetry Day, an occasion that honors the heritage and history of black people. Black Poetry Day is observed to commemorate the birth of the first published black poet in the United States of America, Jupiter Hammon, who is commonly regarded as the patriarch of African-American literature. Black Poetry Day celebrates the black experience as it is recounted through poetry and honors the literary contributions of black poets.
THE RELEVANCE OF BLACK POETRY DAY
Stanley A. Ransom, a folk musician, suggested in 1970 that October 17 be designated as a day to honor black literature and culture. Black Poetry Day was established in 1985 to draw attention to the literary contributions and achievements of African-American writers and to commemorate the birth of Jupiter Hammon, a pioneering Black poet in the United States.
Hammon was born at the Lloyd Manor in Long Island on October 17, 1711, during the era of servitude. The Lloyds, his landlords, granted him access to education via the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, an organization affiliated with the Anglican Church. Utilizing this education, Hammon composed poetry that was supported by intricate metaphors and symbols. Jupiter Hammon published his inaugural poem, titled “An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries,” in 1761, at the age of nearly 50. Owing to his esteemed reputation as a minister and clerk, his poems addressing the subject of slavery achieved extensive dissemination. Twenty-eight years subsequent to the initial publication of his poem, Jupiter Hammon secured publication for his second poem, titled “An Address to Miss Phillis Wheatley.” Wheatley was the inaugural black female author to receive publication recognition. Jupiter Hammon expressed his admiration and support for her through a dedication poem.
Hammon understood the importance of encouraging and supporting fellow black writers, particularly during an era when black writers were seldom supported compared to their white counterparts. Presently, an immense number of proficient black poets hailing from various parts of the globe peddle their respective personal and collective black experiences through spoken-word poetry, written poetry, and rap. Although observed nationwide, Oregon is the only state to have officially designated Black Poetry Day as a state holiday.
