On Friday, a cohort of students expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the case filed against ten fellow students in connection with the altercation that occurred on Thursday during the Holi celebrations at Aligarh Muslim University.

Later that day, six students, led by AMU proctor Prof. Mohd Wasim Ali, asked the police for an impartial investigation.

“Ten AMU students filed a FIR, and students staged demonstrations in opposition to it.” “On Thursday night, we gathered, shut down the Bab-e-Syed gate, and raised slogans once more on Friday, but they quelled us,” he said.

“A group of students demanded a fair investigation into the matter when they met with SSP Aligarh today,” he said.

Two student factions fought on Thursday afternoon during Aligarh Muslim University’s Holi celebration. The Aligarh Civil Lines police arrested 10 students who opposed the festivities. The authorities said they recorded no injuries and managed the situation.

The proctor stated, “We allow Holi celebrations and AMU has allowed students of all faiths to celebrate holidays since its founding.” He said, “We need permission to hold the Holi event on campus.”

“There is no prohibition on any festival, and Holi is not an exception.” Since the university’s founding, students have been celebrating Holi. “However, a student leader requested authorization to observe Holi at a particular location on the athletic field across from the engineering college on the university campus,” he said.

“The circle officer attended the university on Thursday to negotiate authorization. The discussion centered on establishing a brand-new festival custom at an unapproved location. During the discussion, we revealed a student fight near engineering colleges. “We rushed to the scene and dispersed and pacified the students involved in the altercation,” he said.

“We have charged ten students who opposed Holi in crime case 124/2024 under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with armed weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly with common object), 153A (causing enmity between religious groups), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (insult to provoke), and 506 (criminal intimidation),” said Ravindra Singh, the in-charge of Aligarh’s Civil Lines police station.

“No arrests have been made at this time; we are investigating the situation.” “Police arrived at the scene without serious injuries,” said the Aligarh Civil Lines police station in charge.

After Thursday’s incident, BJP leaders defended Holi festival participants, claiming that communal grounds had targeted them. They also opposed the celebrations for female students.
