The Supreme Court Friday refused to entertain a petition seeking postponement of the Bihar Assembly elections due to the coronavirus pandemic. A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan and comprising Justices R S Reddy and M R Shah left it to the Election Commission decide the schedule.
The Supreme Court said that states/UTs can ask the UGC to extend exam deadline for final year exams. The decision taken by the state disaster management authority shall prevail over the UGC deadline, the SC said. However, The decision to cancel the exam and promote students is beyond their jurisdiction, it said.

With 77,266 cases in 24 hours, the coronavirus tally in India rose to 3,387,500 on Friday with the death toll at 61,529, as per the latest figures released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Chief secretaries and health secretaries of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, attended the meeting with Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba. Apart from a high caseload, these states and J&K also account for 89 percent of the COVID deaths.
