Breathe vs Asur: 5 striking similarities between the two thriller web series

The OTT platforms are gaining momentum ever since the coronavirus pandemic has led to shutting down of theatres. Not only films, but there are certain web series which became popular over the few months.

The thriller genre saw a variety of web series including Amazon Prime’s Pataal Lok, Voot’s Asur, Amazon’s Breathe Into the Shadow season 2 which recently released and has been winning hearts ever since.

While the audience who have seen both Voot’s Asur and Amazon’s Breathe season 2, they might have noticed some striking similarities between both of them.

With not so much of spoilers, we have curated 5 striking similarities between Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side and Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2.

  • Childhood Tragedy

In both of the series, we have seen the antagonist being the victim of a childhood tragedy. In Asur, the character named Shubh was bullied by his father and was called a devil. Whereas, in Breathe, Abhishek Bachchan’s character Avinash aka J and his mother were tortured by his father that led to him being mentally disturbed. In both the series, the similarity was childhood being the root cause of them being tragic.

  • Indian Mythology

In both the web series, there is a reference of a defeated character from Indian mythology which the antagonists connects or relates with. In Asur, Shubh takes inspiration from Kali or Kalki which is the king of Kalyug. Whereas, in Breathe, Avinash seeks inspiration from Raavan and his 10 heads. Also, the both the series, the mask worn by the antagonist becomes another similarity.

  • Revenge

In both the web series, we accept it or not, the antagonist is on a killing spree in order to seek revenge for their traumatized life. In Asur, Shubh takes revenge from Dr Dhananjay Rajput for sending him in jail for killing his own father. In Breathe, Avinash takes revenge from Natasha for alleging him of misbehavior in his childhood days.

  • Screenplay

Not many might have noticed a striking resemblance in the screenplay of both of the web series. In starting of both of them, there is a shocking incident of which we are given a glimpse into and then in the whole episode, the reason for it or the explanation to it follows. Also at the end of the episodes of the both the series, eagerness doubles up and leaves with a question mark. One of the major reasons which make Asur and Breathe similar as pace of both of them is slow and steady.

  • Kidnapping and blackmail

Another striking similarity between the two web series is that the triller indulges in kidnapping and blackmailing of the main character. In Asur, Shubh kidnaps Dr Nikhil and blackmails him to murder someone. Whereas in Breathe, J kidnaps Avinash’s daughter Siya and blackmails him for murders.

More or less the ending of both the web series is also similar because we are left with a question mark relating to the antagonist which makes us curious to watch further or wait for the next season.

We wonder if anyone else has noticed these similarities between the two popular thriller web series.
