CAA Protest: Modi cancels visit to Assam

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had canceled his scheduled visit to Guwahati in Assam to inaugurate the Khelo India Games. The visit was scheduled for January 10. According to internal sources, the visit has officially been canceled in the wake of intense CAA protests.

The prevailing indigenous bodies in Assam have threatened to intensify the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act if PM Modi visits Assam amid the unrest over the controversial legislation.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) leadership has expressed its opposition to the Prime Minister’s visit in the midst of the volatile situation in the state.

Popular singer Zubeen Garg, in a recent interview, said, “We wish the Prime Minister visits Assam for Khelo India Games. Then we will stage protests against CAA right from the airport.” “He will then able to see how much we are against this Act and he may then rethinks about the decision to impose CAA in Assam,” Gard had added.

On the other hand, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) leadership launched a campaign termed as “Khelo India, Bhago Modi” against Narendra Modi. Members of the indigenous body had decided to greet Modi with these kinds of chants.

Anti-CAA slogans were also raised during the India-Sri Lanka T20 match in Guwahati on Sunday. People also raised voice against Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the washed-out match. Owing to anti-CAA stir in Assam, the December 16 India-Japan Summit in the state was also cancelled.
