Chakri Day 2024: Chakri Day is annually celebrated on April 6 in Thailand. If April 6 falls on a weekend, the holiday is celebrated on the Monday that follows. Chakri Day is a national holiday in Thailand commemorating the royal family and their contributions to the nation. On this day, special attention is paid to the Chakri royal family and how they became the Thai people’s favourite clan. The majority of businesses, schools, and workplaces are closed to participate in the festivities. Chakri Day is also an opportunity for Thais to demonstrate their patriotism.

HISTORY OF CHAKRI DAY

Five Chakri monarchs have graced Thailand since the first Chakri king began his rule in 1782. The Thai people have justifiable affection and respect for the royal family. The Chakri royal family has strengthened Thailand’s diplomatic ties with the rest of the world and supported the arts, sciences, and technology. They have also built some of Thailand’s most significant educational and public institutions.

King Rama I was the first king of the Chakri dynasty (1782 to 1809). Chaophraya Chakri was the name of this famous military leader. He founded the Chakri Dynasty and constructed the Grand Palace. King Rama IV (1851–1868) was an important member of the dynasty; he was a monk for 27 years before ascending to the throne. He was instrumental in modernization and introduced Western science to the nation. Following him was King Rama V (1868 to 1910). The Thai people continue to revere him despite having ruled Thailand for 42 years. He abolished slavery, established modern administration and legal systems, and modernised the financial and educational sectors. His diplomatic skills made Thailand the only country in the region never to have been colonised!

The 1932 revolution made King Rama VII the last absolute monarch of Thailand. Since he accepted the proposal for a constitutional regime, the monarchy has assumed a prominent role in Thai politics. Then came King Rama IX, to whom the title of King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was bestowed. The current monarch is King Rama X, who resides in Bangkok. His sons are not potential heirs to the throne.
