Chandigarh Municipality has finally realised the repercussions of paid parking lot plan after suffering a loss of Rs 5 crore.

The MC’s parking branch has now written to the Commissioner of the Municipality that until the time these empty parking lots were auctioned under Smart Parking Management System, these will be given over to the MC’s engineering wing so that they can run these parking lots on specific pattern for further advantage to generate some revenue for the civic body.

There are 26 parking lots in total and out of which 20 were dysfunctional as either the contractors have surrendered these or the contract period has expired. In May, the MC had auctioned 22 parking lots for just six months for Rs 5.31crore. Notably, in the last two years, most of these parking lots were lying unattended for a number of months, which gave the Municipality a loss of around Rs 5 crore.  In the absence of contractors, not only the MC is suffering but the public is also facing inconvenience daily.
