Union Minister Uma Bharti during a campaign in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday said to a huge crowd that she made rapists “beg for forgiveness” when she was a chief minister. “Rapists should be tortured in front of victims until they beg for forgiveness. When I was the CM, I made them do it,” said the minister in Agra.

The minister was referring to the gang-rape occurred last year of a mother and her teen daughter traveling on the highway in Bulandshahr near Delhi when she made the remark. She also slammed that the state’s Samajwadi Party government, saying it never tried to prevent the release on bail of those detained for the dreadful incident.

Notably, the minister also suggested the ways of making rapists beg for their lives in details. “They should be hung upside down and salt and chilly should be rubbed on their wounds until they scream. Mothers and sisters should watch so they can get closure.”

The veteran BJP leader and the minister went on to explain how she put her thinking into execution when she was the chief minister over a decade ago.  “I would tell the cops to hang the rapists upside down and beat them so hard that they would cry out. I would tell women to watch through windows of the police station,” she said.

When a police officer objected, she shared, “I told him, people who behave like ‘danav’ (demons) cannot have Manavadhikar (human rights). Their heads should be cut off like Ravana’s.”

Uma Bharati, the Water Resources Minister in the central government, is known for her stern statements.  Lately, she said that persons who doubted the Army’s surgical strikes across the Line of Control in September should go to Pakistan.

“Those leaders who say that if Pakistan is demanding evidence of the surgical strike, they should be given the evidence, such people should take citizenship of Pakistan,” Bharti said, appearing to refer to politicians like Arvind Kejriwal.
