On April 25, Lilavati Hospital performed the first convalescent plasma therapy on the patient after the Indian Council Of Medical Research (ICMR) approved of it on compassionate grounds. The donated plasma was of a patient who had recovered from COVID19.

A senior doctor from Lilavati stressed the patients’ acute respiratory distress syndrome and on his unstable condition. “We were hoping that through plasma therapy he would improve but he didn’t show any encouraging sign even after the first 200 ml transfusion.”

Across the globe, several countries are considering plasma therapy as a potential treatment for COVID19. Mumbai had received the green signal from the ICMR to carry out plasma therapy, as a part of phase 2 clinical trial.

The plasma treatment involves using antibodies from the blood of a recovered COVID-19 patient to treat those who are critically affected by the virus.

There are 414 new COVID-19 cases, 20 deaths reported in Mumbai today, the total number of cases crossed the mark of 7,000. Maharashtra has become the worst-hit state in India due to coronavirus.
