Coronavirus (COVID-19): Covid-19 patients and suspected cases in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital have been segregated into their wards according to their faith (religion), where around 1,200 beds have been reserved for coronavirus infected patients.

Medical Superintendent Dr Gunvant H Rathod said that according to the decision of the state government, a ward has been set up for Hindu and Muslim patients, but Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Nitin Patel knew nothing about it.

Dr Rathod said, “Generally, there are separate wards for male and female patients. But here, we have made separate wards for Hindu and Muslim patients.” On being asked the reason for such a segregation, Dr Rathod said, “It is a decision of the government and you can ask them.”

According to the hospitalization plan, as long as the test cases are to be determined, the suspected COVID-19 cases and the confirmed cases are stored in a separate ward. Of the 186 people receiving coronavirus treatment in hospitals, as many as 150 were positive. As per the hospital sources, at least 40 of the 150 are Muslims.

Deputy CM Patel told The Indian Express, “I am not aware of such a decision (on wards as per faith). Generally, there are separate wards for males and females. I will enquire about it.”

Ahmedabad Collector K K Nirala also denied any knowledge of the matter.

In the last week of March, a new block of the Ahmedabad City Hospital was designated as the COVID-19 center in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar zone.
