Cyclone Verdah: Amma canteens to serve free food

As Tamil Nadu reels from the hit by Cyclone Verdah, AIADMK’s Amma Canteens throughout Chennai are offering free food to all. The canteens will remain open and will be serving hungry patrons. The party posted this news through its official Twitter account.

The state had already declared schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, besides coastal areas of Villupuram to remain shut. In addition, power supply has also been suspended in many regions as a precaution. Almost 50 flights have been cancelled and suspended and airport counters are suggesting that the situation will remain similar till late evening on Monday. With wind speeds of upto 100km per hour on land, the city is advised to stock up and keep indoors.

Amma canteens were set up by the Late Chief Minister, Jayalalitha to help make food accessible to everyone. On normal days, the canteen serves an entire plate of rice with sambar for Rs 5. The menu keeps it simple with pongal and idli for breakfast, that too for Re 1. Three options of rice (curd rice/ sambar rice/ lemon rice/ lemon curry rice) are sold at Rs 5 per plate and dinner gives you 2 chapatis with dal for Rs 3. However, they will be dishing out the menu for free on Monday, to provide relief from Cyclone Verdah and its effects.
