Day of Navarre 2023: December 3 is recognized as the Day of Navarre. It honors the culture of the autonomous region and pays homage to the life of Saint Francis Xavier. The Day of Navarre is a national holiday in the Navarre region of Spain, but not in any other region of the country. There are numerous closed businesses and other organizations. Numerous stores are closed. Despite this, supply stores and bakeries may remain open. The schedule of public transportation may be subject to change. Parades and other public events, especially in the municipal and village centers, may cause local traffic congestion. While Pamplona serves as the venue for numerous events, others are organized in neighboring towns and villages.

Day of Navarre History

After its main city and capital, Pamplona, ceased to exist in 1512, that former sovereign kingdom of Spain, formerly known as the Kingdom of Pamplona, ruled the region that is now known as the Kingdom of Navarre until the late 12th century. Approximately 4,000 square miles in size, the province of Navarra contains Tierra de Allién Puertos, which is situated on the northern approach to the Roncesvalles pass.

Up until 1134, when the Navarrese proclaimed Garcia V the Restorer king, Navarre was under Aragonese rule. A succession of French kings succeeded Sancho VII after his relative Theobald I, Count of Champagne, came to power in 1234. Charles II the Bad attained global recognition as a result of his active participation in French politics and the Hundred Years’ War.

John II of Aragon ruled Navarre from 1425 until 1479, at which point he was elevated to the throne. Those who supported a union with France or Castile and those who favored independence from France dominated the nation at that time. The Spanish portion was officially annexed to the Castilian crown in 1515, following its conquest by Ferdinand the Catholic in 1512. French Navarre was a kingdom that maintained its independence until 1589, at which point it was reincorporated into France. As an autonomous kingdom, Spanish Navarre preserved its identity, institutions, and legal system until the nineteenth century.

Saint Francis Xavier was born in Javier, a small hamlet in the Navarre region of Spain, on April 7, 1506. Following his ordination as a Jesuit priest, he undertook missionary work in Japan, China, India, and Indonesia. He expired in China on December 3, 1552, and was subsequently canonized on March 12, 1622. Saint Francis Xavier is currently regarded as the patron saint of the autonomous community of Navarre. Near the entrance of the Bay of Biscay, in northern Spain, Navarre is an autonomous municipality. It shares territory borders with the Basque Country, Aragon, and La Rioja, all of which are autonomous communities.
