Day of the Veterans 2023: The annual observance of Day of the Veterans, also known as Malvinas Day, occurs on April 2 in Argentina. It is a national holiday commemorating the lives lost during the Falklands War of 1982. The holiday was established on November 22, 2000, replacing the Day of Argentine Sovereignty over the Malvinas, Sandwich, and South Atlantic Islands, which had been observed on June 10 to commemorate the appointment of an administrator over the islands in 1892. During the 74-day occupation between April 2 and June 14, 1982, 649 Argentines, 255 Britons, and three Falkland Islanders were killed. On June 14, 1982, Argentina surrendered to the United Kingdom, and the British promptly reclaimed control of the islands.

HISTORY OF DAY OF THE VETERANS

The Falkland Islands are known in Spanish as “Islas Malvinas.” Despite the presence of an Argentine population at the time, the islands had been administered by the British since January 1833. South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands were also incorporated into the Falkland Islands Dependencies in 1908. Argentina founded the Argentine Fishing Company in South Georgia in the early 20th century and declared independence in 1927. In 1938, Argentina declared dominion over the South Sandwich Islands.

Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982. At 9:15 a.m., the British administrator of the islands, Rex Hunt, surrendered. he was evacuated from the islands and sent to Montevideo, Uruguay, in the face of overwhelming military force. The following day, South Georgia and the uninhabited South Sandwich Islands were occupied by Argentina, and Brigadier General Mario Menendez was appointed Military Governor. The islands quickly adopted the Argentine Peso as their official currency, and the driving side was shifted from left to right. The Argentines expelled, imprisoned, or placed under house arrest any citizens they deemed to be a problem. Despite this, there were only a few isolated instances of maltreatment against Falkland Islanders. On June 14, 1982, Argentina surrendered to Britain after a 74-day occupation and fierce combat. The war claimed the lives of 649 Argentines, 255 Britons, and three Falkland Islanders.

Malvinas Day was established as the Day of the Veterans and Fallen of the Malvinas War on November 22, 2000. The new holiday superseded the Day of Argentine Sovereignty over the Malvinas, Sandwich, and South Atlantic Islands, which was previously observed on June 10 to commemorate the appointment of Luis Vernet as the islands’ governor in 1829. The Argentine government continues to assert that the islands are a component of the Tierra del Fuego province. The Falkland Islands do not observe Day of the Veterans.
