Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe 2023: The annual observance of the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe occurs on December 12. Mexico has designated the day as a national holiday. Devotees honor the Virgin Mary’s appearance to a young man on this date in 1531. Even though it is a national holiday, the majority of businesses and organizations celebrate with feasts and ceremonies for their employees.

On this day, individuals from every region of Mexico visit the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, situated in Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo, which serves as the religious epicenter of Mexico. A neighborhood in the northern region of Mexico City, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, is commemorated with a festival and a mass ceremony.

Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe History

The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe signifies a significant turning point in Mexican history through its narrative of faith and miracles. Following their conquest of Mexico, the Spanish desired to convert the native Indians to Catholicism. However, the Spanish encountered numerous obstacles due to the Mexicans’ fervent adherence to their religious and spiritual beliefs. Indigenous people, on the other hand, began to develop a fascination with Catholicism following the prominence of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Juan Diego.

On December 12, 1531, while Juan Diego was a young indigenous Indian walking toward the Hill of Tepeyac, an apparition of the Virgin Mary halted his journey. Diego imagined the Virgin Mary to be a youthful lady adorned with a dark complexion and black hair, more akin to the women who resided in his local community. She directed Diego to approach the bishop with a request to erect a church atop Tepeyac Hill. Diego then hurried to the bishop to relay the message from the Blessed Virgin Mary. Initially skeptical, the bishop denied Diego’s petition to erect a church atop the Hill of Tepeyac.

Once more, the Virgin Mary manifested herself before Diego and instructed him to gather blossoms from the summit of the hill. Diego was certain that the rocky incline would be devoid of flowers by December. Upon ascending the hill, he was astonished to discover that it was enveloped in exquisite, multicolored blossoms! He recalled the instruction and retrieved the blossoms by placing them in his coat.

Carrying the blooms, he revisited the bishop’s residence. When Diego presented the bishop with the floral-adorned coat, the bishop observed a miraculous impression of the Virgin Mary on the garment. Upon beholding the image of the Virgin and the out-of-season blossoms, the bishop concluded that Diego had been truthful. The bishop issued the directive to construct the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe atop Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City.
