Discover National Parks Fortnight History

During the early 19th century, renowned Romantic poets, including Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Byron, composed poetry that extolled the awe-inspiring splendor of the wild countryside. James Bryce, an MP, initiated a campaign for public access to the adjacent areas and a bill that permitted freedom of roaming by the late 19th century. Despite the failure of the measure, the drive continued.

Demand for public access to rural areas increased in the early 20th century, primarily as a result of urbanization and the expansion of towns and cities brought about by industrialization. Public pressure for greater access to the countryside peaked in the 1930s, and by 1932, individuals were engaging in “mass trespasses.” By 1936, nature conservationists and recreation activity advocates had urged the government to establish national parks. The government ultimately enacted an Act of Parliament in 1949 to establish national parks to preserve and beautify their natural splendor. In addition, provisions were made to provide the public with recreational opportunities.

A decade of new national parks emerged in England and Wales during the 1950s, and the rest of England and Europe followed suit. Two Scottish National Parks were a result of the National Parks Act, which the Scottish Parliament passed in 2000. In 2002, they were Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, and in 2003, they were the Cairngorms. Ever since that time, national parks have served as cherished locations for both residents and visitors to spend time appreciating nature, as well as a source of pride for governments. Volunteers are currently engaged in the maintenance and upkeep of national parks.
