Being first lady has been the greatest honour of my life: Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama on Friday said that being first lady “has been the greatest honour of my life” as she bid an early farewell to the White House.

An East Room ceremony honouring the 2017 school counsellor of the year and the work of all school counsellors, marked her final event as first lady.

In an emotionally charged speech, she said “ “If you or your parents are immigrants, know that you are part of a proud American tradition, the infusion of new cultures, talents and ideas, generation after generation, that has made us the greatest country on Earth.”

Countering Trump’s anti-immigrant stand and white supremacy politics, she said “to the young people out there, do not ever let anyone make you feel like you don’t matter or like you don’t have a place in our American story, because you do.”

The speech was full of encouragement to the American youth and children to get the best education they can and then use it to “lead by example with hope, never fear”.

Urging people to be proud of being a part of the world’s greatest nation irrespective of caste, creed and religion, she said “ “If you or your parents are immigrants, know that you are part of a proud American tradition, the infusion of new cultures, talents and ideas, generation after generation, that has made us the greatest country on Earth.”

Michelle Obama further said that she will continue to work on issues she championed as first lady. They include education, fighting childhood obesity and support for military families.
