Former MP Shyama Sinha dies at 74 in Delhi; Bihar CM mourns death

Congress leader and former Member of Parliament (MP), Shyama Sinha died after prolonged illness in Delhi on Monday at the age of 74. Wife of former governor Nikhil Kumar and daughter-in-law of former Bihar chief minister, Satyendra Narayan Sinha, she died during the course of treatment.

Shyama began her career in politics at the initiative of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. She entered parliament in 1999. It was the same period when Congress president, Sonia Gandhi made her parliamentary debut from the Aurangabad Lok Sabha seat of Bihar.

She was also former vice president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee.   Born on 26 November, 1942, Sinha had played a key role as an MP in reviving the Nabinagar super thermal power project.

Several senior leaders, including chief minister, Nitish Kumar and state Congress chief, Ashok Choudhary have condoled her demise. Sinha would be cremated in Patna on Wednesday.

In his condolence message, Kumar said Shyama was not only a popular leader, but also an outstanding social worker. Many leaders, including former union minister, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, AICC media panelist, Prem Chandra Mishra, former minister Kripanath Pathak and BPCC spokesman, Harkhu Jha said the party had lost a powerful voice in social and political arena of Bihar.
