Four Chaplains Day 2024 (US): Four Chaplains Day is annually observed on February 3 to honor four Army chaplains who demonstrated humanitarianism and heroic sacrifice aboard a drowning ship.

In 1943, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, which was loaded to capacity, was traversing the Atlantic Ocean. A German submarine launched a torpedo attack against the vessel, resulting in its sinking and the tragic loss of hundreds of lives.

The History of Four Chapters Day

Father John P. Washington of the Catholic faith, Reverend Clark V. Poling of the Dutch Reformed Church, Reverend George L. Fox of the Methodist faith, and Father John P. Washington of the Jewish faith comprised the four chaplains aboard the ship. Many witnesses recall their valor, assistance, and entreaties for the numerous individuals in distress who were onboard. As a result of extending their life jackets to four individuals in peril, they were compelled to remain adrift on the lowering vessel, consoled solely by the reflection of their deeds and the impending encounter with their Creator.

Established in remembrance of their bravery and adherence to the principles of religious equality and non-discrimination, the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation endeavors to foster interfaith harmony and a sense of altruism among its members. In 1944, they were bestowed with the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross medals by the United States government. They were also nominated for the Medal of Distinction, the highest military distinction, but were ineligible for it due to their lack of active engagement in combat with the enemy. In light of this, Congress established the “Special Medal for Heroism” as a dignified alternative.

Since the bombing on February 3, 1943, numerous military organizations and clubs nationwide have celebrated Four Chaplains Day. In 1998, a senate resolution was enacted to officially recognize the 55th anniversary of the incident and designate Four Chaplains Day.
