Marmot Day 2024 (US): Marmot Day occurs annually on February 2. It is a holiday observed in Alaska to honor marmots and the culture of the state. In 2009, when the 26th Alaska State Legislature formally enacted Senate Bill 58, Marmot Day was proclaimed an official holiday, although local celebrations had been an integral part of frontier life for decades before that.

The Origins of Marmot Day

Marmots are large rodents that stand out for having short but sturdy legs, enlarged claws that are perfect for burrowing, robust bodies, and large heads and incisors that allow them to quickly consume a variety of vegetation. These herbivores are observed in flocks during the summer, but they enter a dormant state underground during the winter.

Marmots typically hibernate in burrows, where they spend the winter. When alarmed, the majority of marmots employ noisy whistles as a means of communication due to their sociable nature. They consume greens, berries, lichens, mosses, roots, and blossoms, among other things.

Marked on April 18, 2009, Marmot Day is an occasion to honor the fascinating creature marmots. The origin of this well-known North American custom can be traced back to a Pennsylvania Dutch superstitious belief. It has garnered significant attention and celebration across the United States, Canada, and certain international locations.

During the celebration, a luncheon takes place where marmot quips and ginger snaps are exchanged, along with other customary party elements. In recent years, Covenant Eyes has conducted the celebration at its global headquarters in Shiawassee County. A marmot positions itself outside its hole at 12:45 p.m. According to legend, if it enters its hole at that time, summer will conclude; otherwise, summer will continue for an additional month.

Since its inception more than ten years ago, Marmot Day has evolved into a cherished Alaskan custom. It assists in the preservation of Alaska’s folk traditions, which have diminished over time, while also honoring the state’s fauna.
