German IIT Madras student sent back for taking part in CAA Protests; Officials say violation of visa issue

German IIT Madras student sent back for taking part in CAA Protests; Officials say violation of visa issue

A student from Germany in the Master’s course of Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has been alleged of supporting Citizenship Amendment Act. He took part in agitation on varsity campus and elsewhere in Chennai against amended citizenship law and against police crackdown on students.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, tweet about the incident and he said: This is dismaying. We used to be a proud democracy, an example to the world: thefederal.com/states/south/t… No democracy punishes freedom of expression. I call on @DrRPNishank to instruct @iitmadras to withdraw the expulsion & allow India to hold its head high in the academic world.”

Many tweets have come up in support of Jakob, expressing solidarity towards his expulsion.

A students’ body, ChintaBar, tweeted in solidarity with Lindenthal.

He left for Amsterdam on Monday, December 23. According to a report in Indian Express, Jakob stated that he had received oral directions to leave India from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Chennai.

He narrated the incident as to what happened he said, “I was asked about my political inclinations after clearing any doubts arising in regards to my residential permit.

They asked about my interests in CAA protests and mass agitation against the act. Then I was told I violated the visa rules and hence I need to leave India. I soon packed my bags and left for Amsterdam.”
