Ghana Republic Day 2023: Every year on July 1, Ghana celebrates its Republic Day. This day commemorates the establishment of the Republic of Ghana in 1960. In spite of gaining independence from the British in 1957, the country did not become a fully sovereign republic until 1960. Republic Day was a national holiday until 2019, when it was reclassified as a ‘commemorative holiday.’ Senior Citizens’ Day is also observed on this day to recognise their contributions to the history of Ghana.
HISTORY OF GHANA REPUBLIC DAY
Before colonisation, the southern region of the sub-Saharan nation of Ghana was home to the potent Ashanti empire. The abundance of natural resources, such as gold, on Ghanaian soil attracted several colonial powers to its doorstep. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to colonise Ghana in the 15th century, but after a series of conflicts with the Ashanti Empire in the 1900s, it was the British Empire that successfully established control. Ghana was the first country in the region to obtain independence from the British on March 6, 1957, after decades of exploitation and oppression.
In the three years that followed, a sovereign republic was established. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah proclaimed the country a republic and assumed the presidency on July 1, 1960, following a constitutional referendum and presidential election. Ghana played a significant role in Cold War-era world politics as one of the leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement to defuse Cold War tensions in the years that followed.
Ghana commemorates its Republic Day today in conjunction with Senior Citizens’ Day to honour the country’s rich heritage and past struggle for independence, as well as to celebrate the sovereign nation that Ghana has become, despite any potential obstacles.
