U.S space agency NASA has said that an asteroid named 99942 Apophis will fly towards the earth in 10 years.
As per the recent data from NASA, the colossal asteroid that is named after the Egyptian god of chaos and destruction is expected to approach dangerously close to the earth on April 13, 2029.
They also said that there is no need to worry about it as it will be about 19,000 miles (31,000 km) away from our planet.
As per NASA, it is relatively rare for such a large object to pass so near to the earth and also it will be a great opportunity for asteroid scientist around the world to do a study of the Apophis size, shape, composition and its interior.
“The Apophis close approach in 2029 will be an incredible opportunity for science,” Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a NASA release.
“We’ll observe the asteroid with both optical and radar telescopes. With radar observations, we might be able to see surface details that are only a few meters in size,” Brozovic said.
U.S astronomers discovered Apophis in 2004. Ever since it was discovered, optical and radar telescopes have tracked Apophis as it continues on its orbit around the sun. that is the reason scientist are able to tell its future.
NASA said that as per the current calculations Apophis still has a small chance of impacting the earth.
