Google has acquired a Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence start-up Halli Labs for an undisclosed sum. This is the first time when Google has acquired a firm in India. Google acquired the startup saying that this will help the US-based giant in building solutions for adding new users to the Internet, especially from developing countries like India.

Google is not just acquiring this firm, but also hiring its employees, without any interest in its current products and services or their continued operation. Halli Labs said in an interview, “We will be joining Google’s Next Billion Users team to help get more technology and information into more people’s hands around the world. We couldn’t be more excited,”

Halli Lab was founded a few years back by Pankaj Gupta, who in past has worked as a data scientist and also had previous startups in San Francisco.  He was also part of the Data, product teams at Twitter for nearly five years. Pankaj further added that “the company was founded with the goal of applying modern AI and machine learning techniques to old problems and domains. “Well, what better place than Google to help us achieve this goal.”

Google has been aggressively expanding its capabilities, especially through acquisitions all around the globe. Google Spokesperson said in an interview, “We are excited that the Halli Labs team is joining Google. They’ll be joining our team that is focused on building products that are designed for the next billion users coming online, particularly in India”.
