Gorakhpur deaths: Dr Kafeel Khan arrested for stealing oxygen for private clinic

Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force arrested Dr Kafeel Khan from Gorakhpur on Saturday, after the alleged 415 deaths of children in Baba Raghav Das Hospital in August. The development comes after the death of 68 kids due to lack of supply of liquid oxygen in the BRD hospital.

Khan, the nodal officer of BRD Medical College’s Department of Pediatrics, was accused of stealing oxygen cylinders for his private clinic. Khan together with former Principal RK Mishra is being probed after the death of 68 kids.

Earlier, additional session judge issued a non-bailable warrant against seven people named in the FIR. The warrants were issued against in charge of AES ward, Dr Kafeel Khan, anaesthetist Dr Satish, pharmacist, Gajanan Jaiswal, accountant, Sudhir Pandey, assistant clerk, Sanjay Kumar Tripathi and gas suppliers, Uday Pratap Singh and Manish Bhandari, investigating officer C Abhishek Singh said.

Post the deaths of mostly infants, many cases were registered under numerous sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The death of infants triggered much embarrassment to the Uttar Pradesh government led by CM Yogi Adityanath. Defending his government, he had said the encephalitis remains a concern in the region from 1970’s.
