Grieving over the death of her daughter, Anitha’s father on Saturday said that his daughter managed to study hard in even difficult circumstances and was concerned about the NEET exam. The 17-year-old Dalit girl, who led a campaign against National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) exams, committed suicide on Friday.

“What wrong had she done, who will answer?” asked Anitha’s father. Demanding the scrapping of NEET, members of Naam Tamilar Katchi today paid tributes to Anitha and staged a protest over her death.

On Friday, Anitha hung herself at her residence in Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, a week after the Centre declared that the state of Tamil Nadu cannot be exempted from NEET. As per reports, Anitha committed suicide after she failed to get a medical seat after NEET was made compulsory.

Anitha had scored 196.75 out of 200 in the medical exam and 199.76 out of 200 for an engineering seat. However, she managed to score only 86 out of 700 in the newly introduced NEET examination. Anitha had scored 1,176 marks out of 1,200 in her class 12 board exams in Tamil Nadu. The marks were enough to get her a seat in a medical college. However, she was upset after learning that she would have to sit again for NEET to be eligible for a medical seat.
