Today we celebrate Hanuman Jayanti to mark the birth of Lord Hanuman. he was born in the month of Chaitra after 12 years of penance by his mother Anjani. Ramayana stories are the ones we are grown hearing and Lord Hanuman was indeed the superhero in them. Lord Hanuman fondly known as superhuman monkey god is a symbol of power, restraint, loyalty, and celibacy.

- Hanuman is said to be the son of wind
Hanuman is known as Pawan Putra (son of wind) or Vayu Dev although he was the son of Vanara God Kesari. His mother Anjani was cursed to live on earth. As per the story, when King Dasharatha performed the Putra Kamesti Yagna, part of the pasaya that was given to him by Yagna Deva was snatched by a bird who dropped it close to the mountain where Anjani was performing penance for a son. Vayu Deva carried the payasam and deposited it in Anjani’s hand who later consumed it. Thus was born Hanuman.
- Hanuman’s brother was Bhima
One of the Pandav brothers Bhima who was known for his superhuman strength like Hanuman was the brother of him coincidentally by virtue of their paternity. As per the Puranas, each of Kunti’s son was fathered by one of the devas and Bhima’s father was Vayu.
- Hanuman mistook sun as fruit
Once Hanuman (when he was young) jumped into the sky to reach for the sun thinking that it was a bright red fruit. He was then saved by Lord Indra by his weapon Vajra or thunderbolt.
- Once Hanuman defeated Lord Rama in a battle
Being an ardent follower of Lord Rama, Hanuman once defeated him in a battle. As per the account, Yayati approached Hanuman to seek refuge from Lord Rama. Sage Vishwamitra had instructed Rama to kill Yayati. Hanuman gave him his word that nothing wrong will happen to him. But chose to defeat Rama in a unique way. By chanting Rama’s name, Hanuman managed to render each of the Lord’s bow ineffective. Seeing Hanuman’s devotion, Rama couldn’t carry out the task and Vishwamitra took back his order.
- Hanuman had a big appetite
Lord Hanuman was a food lover and that fondness for food was the reason he once mistook sun as fruit. But the fact is that Hanuman had a big appetite even in adulthood. It is said that once Sita cooked many delicacies for Hanuman to control his hunger but there was no sign of his hunger vanishing. But Lord Rama offered him a single tulsi leaf and that was enough for him to quell his hunger.
- Hanuman had a son
Although Hanuman is a Naisthika Bramhachari he did had a son. His child is Makardhwaja who was born by accident. When Hanuman took a dip in the sea to settle the fire in his tail after burning Lanka, a drop of his sweat fell into Makra’s mouth who was a sea creature and then Makaradhwaja was born.
- Hanuman is still alive
Hanuman is a Chiranjeevi or an immortal because he has the boon of immortality. So he still lives according to some accounts. As long as Rama’s name is taken by the people in the world, Hanuman will continue to live till the end of time. Hanuman’s stories span across the three yugas: Tretha Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga, which indicate that he has an extraordinarily long life.
