A few days back many farmer organisations in Haryana were seen violating the government orders to protest at the Pipli wholesale grain market near Kurukshetra. The Delhi-Chandigarh national highway was also blocked for some time as the police stopped them to reach the venue. The protests are preceded by sit-ins across Punjab and might increase after 14th September when the Monsoon session meeting will end.

For now, the protests are taking place only in Haryana and Punjab but farmer organisations of Maharashtra are also against the three ordinances including the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020. This will be the first step to provide financial freedom to farmers.

As per reports, farmers are not happy with the first ordinance as compared to the other two. The first ordinance allows the sale and purchase of crops outside the states and sell them in mandis. The second and third ordinance talks about the stocking of food and contraction cultivation.

According to farmers, the three ordinances will limit their income which is already less and they won’t be able to survive in the market if these are implemented. The farmer organisations have asked the government to leave this decision to the state authorities. The congress government is also backing the farmers on the same. If traders move away from mandis the most affected will be Punjab and Harayana farmers.

However, the government believes that these three ordinances will help the farmers as they can save transportation money but centre should listen to them and their problems. The ordinances were made during the pandemic.
