Hong Kong Food Regulators Discover Cancer-Causing Ingredients: Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety found carcinogenic ingredients in four spice brands manufactured in India, MDH and Everest Masala.
The food regulator of Hong Kong found that three products of MDH contained the pesticide ethylene oxide, which is a Group-1 carcinogen. These products included Madras Curry Powder (spice blend for Madras Curry), Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder.
“The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today that several kinds of prepackaged spice mix products were found to contain ethylene oxide,” said CFS.

“Members of the public should not consume the affected products. The trade should also stop using or selling the affected products immediately if they possess any of them,” it added.

What is Ethylene oxide?
It is used in agriculture, healthcare, and food processing industries to control microbial contamination and extend shelf life by eliminating bacteria, fungi, and insects. It is a colorless, flammable gas.
Many countries have strict regulations governing the use of ethylene oxide in food products because it is a highly reactive compound classified as a carcinogen.
