How to Use the Free File Program
To get started with Free File, taxpayers need a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access. On the IRS website, users can find a list of approved “trusted partners” offering free tax software. Once you select a provider, you can follow the simple, step-by-step instructions to file your tax return.
Taxpayers with an AGI exceeding $84,000 can use Free File Fillable Forms (FFFF) starting from January 27. These are electronic versions of the IRS paper forms, suitable for those who are comfortable preparing their own taxes with the IRS’s provided instructions.
Anyone wishing to use the Free File software can click on the ‘Select a provider’ button on the IRS website. This will allow them to search for and choose one of the trusted partners available this tax season. A total of eight trusted partners are listed for taxpayers to choose from, ensuring they can access the right resources for filing their taxes securely and for free.
