Essentially, the Chaos parameter can be used to control the degree to which your image grids differ from the original set of images Midjourney generated in response to the same prompt.
The Chaos parameter is the functional inverse of the Seed parameter. In contrast to the latter, which is used to generate identical-looking image grids based on the seed value allotted to one generation, Chaos is intended to generate more unexpected outcomes relative to the initial set of images. It is useful when you want Midjourney to generate images that are stylistically and compositionally distinct from your original creation but are based on the same prompt.
To control the randomness of your generation, you input –chaos followed by a value that determines the degree to which the initial image grids differ from the subsequent set of images. You can input any value between 0 and 100 to generate the images you desire. When you input low –chaos values, the generated images will be more reliable and have similar compositions. As you increase the chaos value, you will obtain increasingly unexpected results and compositions.

Note: To avoid confusion, we’ll use –chaos (value) in this post’s prompts. However, you can still use –c (value) to achieve the same results.
To begin using the Chaos parameter in your image creations, activate any of Midjourney’s Discord servers or access the Midjourney Bot through your Discord Server or Discord Direct Message. Tap the text field at the bottom regardless of how you accessed it.
Here, enter /imagine and select /imagine from the resulting menu.
Now, input the desired prompt in the “prompt” box, followed by the –chaos (value) parameter. Replace (value) with a number between 0 and 100, depending on how diverse you want the images to be each time a generation is executed. After entering the prompt and chaos value, you can select the Enter key to send this image creation request to Midjourney.
Midjourney will now begin processing your image grid; once complete, you should be presented with a set of four images based on your prompt and chosen chaos value.
You can use the upscale and vary options below the image grid to obtain the desired image on Midjourney, or you can use the same command with a different chaos value to generate a more diverse output. You can also replicate the creation process with the same prompt and chaos value to compare the generated image grids.
How to Effectively Use the Chaos Parameter on Midjourney: What happens when Chaos values are altered?
As stated previously, the Chaos parameter cannot alter the output of your Midjourney image creations. Midjourney allows you to specify a desired chaos value to generate the next set of images, giving you granular control over the degree to which your images deviate from the original.
If you compare images generated without the chaos parameter with those generated with the chaos value set to 0 (zero), you will obtain similar (but not identical) image grids regardless of the number of times you process the same prompt. There may be modest adjustments, but nothing that would significantly alter the overall structure.
Set a chaos value between 10 and 20 to observe how the composition of these images varies slightly when responding to the same prompt.
If you want to see more diverse results, you can increase the chaos value to 25 or higher to generate more unexpected and unusual outcomes. As you increase this value, the generated images will no longer be repetitive, and some of them may not even be germane to the input prompt.
In addition to increasing the chaos value each time, you can repeat the same prompts with the same (higher) chaos value to produce unique generations each time the imagine task is executed.
Set the chaos value to 100 and observe the results to obtain a completely different image grid in comparison to your current generation. When you do this, your image may have an entirely different composition and artistic mediums, and these differences will be noticeable from generation to generation.
How do images with varying chaos values appear?
To illustrate how the Chaos parameter affects the composition and manner of your images, we’ve created a variety of images with varying chaos values. Here is how the original set of images appeared when the prompt /imagine prompt clockwork chicken was inputted without the chaos parameter.
Compare the image above to the image grids we generated with chaos values of 0, 10, 25, 50, and 100.
According to the results displayed above, only images with chaos values set to 0 have similar compositions. As the chaos values are increased, the three image grids will appear significantly distinct from one another. This is evident when comparing the images generated with the chaos value set to 100, as the results no longer correspond to the initial prompt.
