Independence Day Saint Lucia History

Formerly referred to as Windward Island, Saint Lucia was initially identified by Europeans during the late 15th or early 16th centuries. The island was initially colonized by the French, who bestowed upon it the name Saint Lucia, denoting a youthful Christian martyrdom lost in the persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire in 304 A.D.

The island was initially ruled by the English in 1663 before being conquered fourteen times, seven times by the French and seven times by the English. Saint Lucia became a British Windward Islands colony in 1814, as stipulated in the Treaty of Paris, which brought an end to the Napoleonic Wars and halted the succession of ownership. It attained self-governance in 1967 as one of the six constituent states of the West Indies Associated States.

Independence Day commemorates the momentous occasion in 1979 when St. Lucia achieved complete independence from the Commonwealth of Nations. This achievement was spearheaded by conservative United Workers Party (U.W.P.) member Sir John Compton, who subsequently assumed the position of prime minister.

The day’s festivities commence with the customary military parade, which is followed by the prime minister delivering the Independence Address. ‘Annou We-y’ is the name of an afternoon procession that occurs in the capital city of Castries. It is comprised of numerous floats, organizations, personalities, and groups.

The day is packed with a variety of activities, including visits to the beaches, fishing excursions, and meandering through the footpaths of the interior rainforest of the island.
