On this date, the Indian Constitution was ratified, and India would not be the great nation it is today if it did not have a constitution. Therefore, it is imperative that special celebrations be held on this day. This article examines the significance of this date and how it can be commemorated.

HISTORY OF INDIAN REPUBLIC DAY

In order to become a prosperous nation, India endured numerous trials and hardships prior to granting its citizens their freedom. India has experienced it all, from being ruled by Muslim Mughal emperors to being governed by the British. In 1950, when the Constitution was drafted, it was a source of great pride due to the country’s numerous struggles. This is the day commemorated as Republic Day today.

It all began in 1947, when India won its independence from the British Empire. In November 1947, the Constituent Assembly was presented with a draught of the Constitution. Nonetheless, it took the Assembly over two years of deliberations and amendments to finalise the Constitution; the sessions were open to the public.

In addition, the Assembly ratified the Constitution on November 26, 1949, but it did not immediately take effect. The documents establishing the constitution were signed on January 24, 1950, and the Constitution entered into force on January 26, 1950. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first president, also began his term on this date. The Constitution replaced the Government of India Act and established India as a democratic republic upon its implementation. Today is Republic Day to commemorate the day democracy and justice were chosen to govern the nation. This lack of rule of law is prevalent in many dictatorships.
