International Bacon Day 2023

International Bacon Day 2023: International Bacon Day is an unofficial holiday that is observed annually on the first Saturday of September. Even though it is an international holiday, some cultures celebrate it on different dates, including February 19 and the first Saturday of January. Bacon is pork that has been salted and dried or smoked after being cured with salt. The flavour is unparalleled and a staple in American cuisine.

THE HISTORY OF WORLD BACON DAY

The Chinese first served salted pork on their tables thousands of years ago. The practise of curing pigs spread from there throughout the Roman Empire. Anglo-Saxon colonists also used bacon fat for cooking. Bacon or ‘bacoun’ originates from Middle English, with French and German dialectal influences. Until the 16th century, it was used to describe all swine meat.

The National Pork Board has designated Hernando de Soto as the ‘father of the American pork industry.’ Three years after bringing 13 pigs to the New World in 1539, Soto’s herd expanded to 700 animals. As the saying goes, the rest is history.

Bacon Day, on the other hand, was founded in 2004 by a group of CU Boulder graduate students from Colorado. Bucknell University students celebrate bacon day by consuming as much meat as possible and referring to themselves as ‘Meatheads.’ Bacon Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom around January 14 as a means of procrastination and fuel for revision prior to winter examinations.

In the United States, bacon is the pig’s midsection, whereas Canadian bacon is made from the loin. Bacon is smoked with mesquite, hickory, or maple wood, and additional flavouring ingredients may be added. Typically, bacon is consumed for breakfast, in B.L.T. sandwiches, or on its own.
