International Cheetah Day 2023 History, FAQs, Dates, and Activities

International Cheetah Day is on December 4, and we are getting ready to celebrate these magnificent, high-speed machines that nature has created. Cheetahs are breathtakingly beautiful and tremendously swift animals. However, were you aware that the cheetah is the most imperiled large animal in Africa? This day serves as a reminder that these magnificent creatures deserve our respect and protection.

International Cheetah Day History

The origin narrative of International Cheetah Day merits a cinematic adaptation. It all began in 1977 when Dr. Laurie Marker, an American zoologist, traveled to Namibia with Khayam, a cheetah she had reared from a cub at Wildlife Safari in Oregon. It was conducted as part of an experiment to determine whether it was possible to rehabilitate captive cheetahs to hunt and survive in the open.

Following the success of the venture, she and Khayam returned to the United States. However, Dr. Marker observed that livestock proprietors presented a danger to the cheetah population in its natural habitat while in Namibia. They were actively eradicating cheetahs due to the fact that they posed a danger to their livestock.

In an effort to mediate the dispute between Namibian farmers and cheetahs, Dr. Marker established the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1991 with the solemn commitment to safeguarding the untamed cheetah population. She educated and negotiated with the residents regarding wildlife conservation. Dr. Marker designated Khayam’s birthday as a day to advocate for cheetah conservation in remembrance of the late one. International Cheetah Day has been observed on December 4 since 2010 in an effort to bring attention to the extinction peril these felids face.

Since increased human settlements have led to the loss of cheetah habitat and excessive hunting for their pelt, there are an unfortunate 7,100 cheetahs remaining in the wild as of 2020. This is an alarming fifty percent decline over the past forty years. Therefore, let us observe this day as an opportunity to conserve and honor cheetahs.
