International Dance Day is marked annually on April 29 as a day to celebrate the art form called dance. The Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) created this day and it is the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO. It formally recognizes ITI to be creators and organizers of the event.
The relevance of keeping this day on April 19 was to commemorate the birthday of Jean Georges Noverre who was born in 1727. He was a French dancer, ballet master and a great reformer of dance. The day is observed annually to increase awareness of the importance of dance among the general public. This day also aims at convincing the governments across the country to include the art form in the education system.
This day observes different events and festivals over the world. Events include open door courses, exhibitions, dance evenings, street shows, and special performances.
Not only this, a message from famous dance personality is circulated throughout the world about the importance of the day. This year, in 2019 the French embassy in Nigeria said they will host the International Dance Day celebration for the first time.
Every year this day creates selected hosts city were dance performances, workshops and humanitarian projects are held. Also, the day witnesses speeches made by ambassadors, famous people, and dance personalities on the importance of dance. To cherish the art form, various choreographers and dance students also come together to attend the workshop and to showcase their talent in dance.
