THE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY

In 1981, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated the third Tuesday of September as International Day of Peace. This day coincided with the start of the General Assembly’s annual sessions. The purpose of the day was, and continues to be, to strengthen global peace ideals.

In 2001, twenty years after instituting this day of observance, the assembly moved the date to the 21st of September. In 2002, the 21st of September became not only a time to discuss how to promote and sustain peace among all peoples, but also a 24-hour period of global ceasefire and nonviolence for groups engaged in active combat.

Peace is achievable. Throughout history, most societies have lived in tranquility most of the time. Today, the likelihood of dying in a conflict is much lower than it was for our parents and grandparents. Since the establishment of the United Nations and the creation of the United Nations Charter, governments are obligated not to use force against others unless they are engaging in self-defense or have received authorization from the UN Security Council.

Today, we turn to those who have been peacemakers and peacekeepers to learn what we can do individually to make the world a more peaceful place.

We can become caught up in the mundane tasks of work and family life. However, it is sometimes beneficial to consider how communities and nations must leave their comfort zones. When we make an effort to understand another person’s perspective, or “walk a mile in their shoes,” we can achieve harmony.
