International Men’s Health Week 2019: What are the main causes of Erectile Dysfunction in men?

International Men’s Health Week 2019 is ongoing and will last on June 16. The week is dedicated to spreading awareness about men’s health issues that they have to go through. The week aims at raising awareness about preventable health problems in men and boys and encourages early detection and treatment of diseases.

All kind of health issues should be given equal consideration but more importance is given to the ones that are more prevalent in men such as erectile dysfunction, impotence, prostate cancer, male incontinence, testicular health issues.

Erectile dysfunction amongst many others is one such health issue that is also attached to the stigma of being judged and hence the chances of men reporting the health concern go down.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as continuous difficulty in achieving and maintaining an erection to be able to have sex.

According to the statistics, about 5 percent of men that are 40 years old have complete erectile dysfunction whereas mild and moderate erectile dysfunction affects approximately 10 percent of men per decade of life.

To treat this, it is important to know the causes that could possibly lead to  Erectile Dysfunction.

Cause of ED aren’t always medical or physical but can also be psychological

Main Causes of Dysfunction in men

The most growing reason that is contributing to erectile dysfunction is obesity and metabolic syndrome causing changes in blood pressure, body composition, and cholesterol.

Some of the conditions such as multiple sclerosis, erectile dysfunction. ED can also be caused by excessive intake of alcohol and drug abuse. The main health issues in the body that cause erectile dysfunction are issues related to blood flow, nerve supply, and hormones.

  • High cholesterol
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Thyroid conditions and testosterone deficiency
  • Anatomical disorder such as Peyronie disease

  • Pelvic area or spinal cord injury
  • Radiation therapy
  • Atherosclerosis

Psychological causes of ED:

  • Anxiety
  • Fear of intimacy
  • Depression
