International NFT Day 2023

International NFT Day 2023: NFTs are the future of digital ownership, and the 20th of September has been designated as International NFT Day. In the guise of the ERC-721 standard, Dapper Labs Chief Technology Officer Dete Shirley coined the term NFT (non-fungible token) on this day in 2017.

Since then, NFTs have not only become their own industry, but also a cultural phenomenon where communities are formed and people congregate. Digital expression has taken on a new meaning with the advent of NFTs, and continues to have a significant cultural and economic impact. NFTs feature incredible athletic moments, breathtaking artwork, passionate communities, and innovative ideas.

International NFT Day is all about recognizing the NFT community’s creators and collectors. It is also a day for individuals to learn about NFTs and begin their own collections. NFTs are cryptographic tokens or digital artifacts that are issued on the blockchain. The process of creating an NFT is known as “minting,” and the capacity to possess NFTs is secure, verifiable, and entirely under the owner’s control. Any digital asset could become an FT.

International NFT Day 2023: HISTORY

Non-fungible tokens (or NFTs) have made a name for themselves in the digital world as both tradable tokens and a form of artistic expression. Combined with the fact that NFTs cannot be duplicated or their ownership altered, the result is a flourishing community that serves as a haven for passionate creators and collectors.

What began as an investigation into the potential applications of blockchain has now taken on a life of its own. The Chief Technology Officer of blockchain technology company Dapper Labs, Dete Shirley, published a paper titled the ERC-721 standard on September 20, 2017. ERC-721 was the first time the term “NFT” was used and would become the standard for non-fungible tokens. The term ‘Non-Fungible Token’ was first introduced in this proposal and has become the entity’s abbreviation since its introduction. International NFT Day not only commemorates the annual anniversary of this revolutionary publication, but also the origin of NFTs themselves.

Since then, NFTs have only grown, with early staples such as CryptoPunks becoming status symbols, Bored Apes gaining mainstream recognition through influencers and celebrities, and enormous platforms such as NBA Top Shot demonstrating the power of authentic licensed collectibles from major intellectual property. The industry for non-fungible tokens is projected to reach $80 billion by 2025, a projection that supports the notion that non-fungible tokens are here to stay.

NFTs are not merely an industry, however. Their popularity extends beyond the dollar signs, as they become collectibles that individuals value and identify with. They have become a method for collectors to identify individuals with similar interests, spawning communities of individuals who embrace this technology and its future. NFT Day is a day of celebration for the entire community and a significant opportunity to reflect on our origins.
