International Women’s Day 2024: March 8 is International Women’s Day, an occasion celebrated worldwide that honors the political, cultural, and historical contributions of women. Additionally, the day was observed to encourage global action against gender inequality. It goes without saying that without women, the world could not function (just listen to Beyoncé). On this day, express your gratitude for their efforts.

Collectively, large and minor organizations demonstrate to women their intrinsic worth in contemporary society. Additionally, assist the women in your vicinity in locating information regarding scholarships that are accessible to women worldwide, so that they may expand their horizons and soar higher.

International Women’s Day History

Susan B. Anthony advocated for women’s rights and was a political activist. She fought for the 14th Amendment, which was intended to grant citizenship to all naturalized and native-born Americans, with the expectation that it would include suffrage rights, after the American Civil War. Despite the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868, it failed to garner their support. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton established the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) in 1869 to advance the cause of women’s rights.

During the early 1900s, women encountered wage disparity, were denied the right to vote, and endured excessive work hours. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City to demand their rights in response to the circumstances above. The inaugural National Women’s Day was observed on September 1, 1909, per a Socialist Party of America proclamation. Until 1913, this was observed on the final Sunday of February.

In August 1910, Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist and Women’s Office leader, orchestrated an International Women’s Conference. Zetkin suggested the establishment of an annual Women’s Day, and the following year, demonstrations in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland drew over one million participants in observance of International Women’s Day. The ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 18, 1920, resulted in the emancipation of Caucasian women in the United States.

During the 1960s, there was a liberation movement that resulted in the enactment of the Voting Rights Act, which granted the right to vote to all women. The proliferation of the internet coincided with a renewed emphasis on feminism and the struggle against gender inequality. Presently, we observe International Women’s Day annually to establish a society where all individuals are treated equally.
