International Women’s Day History
Susan B. Anthony advocated for women’s rights and was a political activist. In August 1910, Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist and Women’s Office leader, orchestrated an International Women’s Conference. Zetkin suggested the establishment of an annual Women’s Day, and the following year, demonstrations in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland drew over one million participants in observance of International Women’s Day. The ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 18, 1920, resulted in the emancipation of Caucasian women in the United States.
During the 1960s, there was a liberation movement that resulted in the enactment of the Voting Rights Act, which granted the right to vote to all women. The proliferation of the internet coincided with a renewed emphasis on feminism and the struggle against gender inequality. Presently, we observe International Women’s Day annually to establish a society where all individuals are treated equally.
