The Bihar education department has launched an investigation into claims that a government school in the Patna area was using student wooden seats as fuel to cook lunch.

A Times of India story claimed that a video that went popular on social media prompted the investigation. On social media, the Upgraded Middle School, Korhar video—which is located in the Patna district’s Bihta block—went viral.

The report claims that because the school administration lacked the funds to purchase fuel, they approved the use of school benches for cooking midday meals.

According to the ToI report, the video purports to show a lady pushing a school bench into a flaming earthen oven to cook food. The footage also features a large cooking pot on top of a blazing stove, with what appears to be food being prepared for the pupils within.

Each day, 1.18 crore students in Nitish Kumar’s state of Bihar eat lunch in schools.

About fifty schoolchildren at a primary school in the Dumra Block in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar reported vomiting and having stomachaches in September of last year. This was purportedly after they had eaten a midday meal.

Dr. Sudha Jha claims that the kids had complained about finding a chameleon in their midday lunch. They had eaten the same thing. Every child in this care is stable and free of symptoms. We have continued to monitor them. Now everything is back to normal. Their parents are with them. Nothing to be concerned about.

Earlier this month, the Bihar education department declared it will take strong measures against government instructors who accept private tuition.

District judges were instructed to obtain written guarantees from all private coaching centers under the authority of Bihar Education Department Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) K K Pathak that “no government school teachers will take classes in their institutions” in a letter sent on Monday.
