Google, an Alphabet Inc. subsidiary, has said that it will be letting go of hundreds of workers from its engineering, hardware, and digital assistant divisions. This action is a component of the business’s continuous cost-cutting initiatives.

According to a Bloomberg article, the layoffs will have an impact on workers who are developing Google Assistant, a voice-activated technology, and the hardware team for augmented reality. Job losses will also occur in the company’s primary engineering group.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson explained, “In the latter half of 2023, several of our teams changed to improve efficiency and better align resources with our top product priorities. Some teams are still implementing these organizational changes, which unfortunately involve job cuts worldwide.”

Semafor for the Google Assistant team and 9to5Google for the hardware team broke the initial news of the layoffs. The impacted workers have been informed and will be allowed to apply for other Google job openings.

Disapproving of the layoffs, the Alphabet Workers Union, which represents certain Google employees, made a statement on social network X, formerly known as Twitter. The union stated, “Our members and colleagues work diligently every day to create excellent products for our users. It’s unacceptable for the company to continue terminating employees while it earns billions every quarter. We will continue to fight until our jobs are secure!”
